Business Planning

Plans are a critical component to developing a shared vision and identifying all of the participants and actions required to make the vision a reality. This course looks at the many different types of plans that a healthcare organization can use to stay on course.

Course Overview

This course provides an overview of the different types of plans being used throughout the healthcare industry and how and why they are utilized both inside and outside the organization.  The course covers Business Plans, Certificates of Need and explores the Grant Process and how it is being utilized as both a funding and planning activity.

In this module you learn about the Certificate of Need process, a regulatory process governing the expenditures healthcare institutions make to improve their healthcare facilities and offerings.

In this module you learn about grants; how, when, and why they are used; an example of a grant process; the financial implications of grants; and the grant application process in different states.

Course Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • Understand the variety of plans used in healthcare today, their purpose for being, the unique content and creation requirements for each, and the expected outcomes from their development and use.
  • Understand the Certificate of Need process and its importance in business planning
  • Understand the Grant Process and how it is being used in different ways to plan and fund key initiatives
  • Cite the New York State Healthcare Efficiency and Affordability Law (HEAL) as an example of a capital grant program and understand its effect on planning.
