Applying Business Intelligence and Decision Support in Provider Organizations
Course Overview
This course will overview the identification, capture and application of Business Intelligence (BI) in provider organizations. It will include how to extract appropriate metrics and how to utilize the metrics to drive fact-based decisions. The processes and procedures used for the selection and implementation of the underlying technology required to implement a business intelligence system will be shared and discussed.
The course is divided into 3 modules.
Module 1 – An Overview

Module 1 will present an overview of the ways in which Business Intelligence and decision support improve healthcare –particularly by providers; hospitals, health systems, large practices, and independent physician associations – by improving operating efficiencies and finding waste. It will also cover the basic fundamentals of BI and the elements of a BI solution.

Module 3 will discuss a real-life case study of a Rochester, New York health system that is applying Business Intelligence in its’ day-to-day operations.

Al spent the formative years of his career with top-tier professional services firms, as a systems engineer with EDS, a systems consultant with Ernst and Whinney, and a management consultant with McKinsey & Co. Al then spent 16 years in strategic technology and services management with Xerox and Kodak/Carestream Health. Al was an innovator and key contributor for both companies, providing executive leadership in marketing, strategy, IT, business development, channels, and sales.
Al is a change agent who is able to understand complex industry dynamics and identify ways in which technology can make a lasting, positive impact for leading companies. Al has experience helping a company achieve dramatic growth through new offerings, new channels/alliances and focused efforts within high-priority markets and segments.
Al has deep experience in healthcare, and has helped numerous providers attain significant grant funds and improve performance through the effective use of Healthcare Information Technology (HIT).
- Al has been the executive responsible for selling, implementing and integrating digital imaging solutions in hospitals, private practices, integrated delivery networks, and government/military environments.
- He is considered a thought leader in the effective use of HIT with a strong ability to define a vision, align disparate stakeholders, and obtain grants from a multitude of sources to fund the innovative use of HIT.
- Al earned this reputation as the initiator, advocate, and architect of the Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) in Rochester, NY, and has since reinforced it with health systems and University Medical Centers. Al was instrumental in conducting a comprehensive feasibility study and successfully applying for grant funds that served as the seed capital for this successful venture.
Al is also an active volunteer on several boards and has successfully contributed to public affairs and lobbying efforts on HIT in Washington and New York. Al is a former member of the steering committee of Connecting for Health and active member with the eHealth Initiative, where he developed the first toolkit “How to Define and Build a Healthcare Information Exchange (HIE)”.

Stephen Wallace is an executive-level professional with over 30 years of proven leadership experience designing, developing and delivering Information Technology solutions in Business and Healthcare based environments.
Steve has been CIO of four large organizations in the past twenty years, including almost seven years as the Corporate CIO for a $5bil public company, where he implemented and managed a large shared service team with over 200 people and was responsible for many large projects, some exceeding $100m.
Steve founded BizLitics LLC to help organizations improve their performance. Leveraging his business and technology expertise, he helps organizations identify underperforming systems and processes. He then works with business and technical leaders to define an optimal end state solutions, and a develops a business cases to support the required investment. Finally, he assembles and leads cross-functional business and technology teams to deliver results. He uses “Agile” solutions development and implementation methodologies to insure rapid time to benefit.
Steve has a BS in Operations Management from Syracuse University, an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a Doctorate in Computing from Pace University.
